It would be best if you take a course and get ICF certification in Life Coaching. Life Coaching is not like therapy: you are not the expert; the client is the expert on his/her life and you are there to ask the right questions to help the client discover how they should proceed. You are there to mirror the client, help them set goals and hold them accountable for the goals that they set.

how can I start life coaching in puerto rico?
I have a bachelor's degree in social work and really like the idea of life coaching vs. talk-therapy. I am interested in some ideas on how to get started and if I have to take specific classes, ect. I just finished school but have been in the mental health and chemical dependence field for some years now and tend to have a pretty realistic outlook on life. Help!

It is an unregulated area.You can start it yourself by reading books.Diplomas add credibility.You can join some short diploma course to add to your name while advertising your services.Some knowledge of psychology is needed to create a feeling that your are a special coach.

no, just try and get your own website up and running offering your services. You could approach some big companies offering your services for free and this would be good experience and references for you.

I say you should take some type of related courses, like you can always just take regular Psychology and/or Sociology classes to help you learn about how people work, and then just start advertising yourself and your own particular way of doing things. If you start doing the work without any "training" in anything at all, people won't be as likely to come to you, they like to see that you've been to school somewhere, not necessarily a life coach training course but something that shows you've been taught how to work with people.

Life coaching is unregulated so you can just start. I guess if your methodology is in the idea stage then you will have had no input into effective communications or dealing with individuals in the way that THEY want to develop rather than the way you want to develop them.

If you think about it your method will work effectively but only with people who want to develop the way you do - and that can be a low percentage. You need to have knowledge of all developmental strategies to be a great coach. With this knowledge you can facilitate development for all your clients in the way that THEY want to, which is very effective.

I agree with your thoughts on some coaching courses, remember they are unregulated as well. I have picked up a good handle on this stuff from educational psychology, educating adults and NLP. Each swear the other has no bearing on each other but I am a practitioner and I know they all mesh.

As a start I would look at learning styles by Honey and Mumford, Transactional analysis by Eric Byrne and representation systems from NLP, when you get a handle on these I know you will start to see the bigger picture. You can find info on them all at
